Environmental Sustainability in Aviation Discussed at "Fikir Bir Kahve" Event
The focus of this week's "Fikir Bir Kahve" (An Idea, A Coffee) events, which facilitate information exchange among academic staff at Dalaman Vocational School, was sustainability in aviation. As part of the event, Lecturer Dr. Halil Semercioğlu, one of our school's faculty members, shared his successfully completed doctoral thesis with his colleagues.
In his presentation, Dr. Semercioğlu addressed the environmental sustainability policies developed by airline operators to reduce their carbon footprint, as well as the green transition processes in aviation. In the study—where every stage of airline operations, from raw material and fuel supply to flight operations, and from sustainable aviation fuels to ground handling services, is analyzed through the lens of environmental impact—the current sustainability practices of airline operators active in Turkey were evaluated using a comparative case analysis method.
Following the presentation, deep insights were exchanged with the participating academic staff. The industry's compliance process with international regulations, the impacts of the green deal on Turkish civil aviation, and potential new projects that could be conducted in this field within the academic world were evaluated.
In the final part of the discussion, ideas continued to be shared by addressing other academic studies, planned projects, and current scientific debates within the vocational school.
